What does the Reservoir Level data represent?

  • Reservoir Level data represents the current water storage as a percentage of the live capacity at Full Reservoir Level (FRL) compared to last 10 years' average reservoir level as % of FRL.
  • The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) refers to the maximum level to which a reservoir can be filled without causing any spillage. 'Live storage' is the part of the reservoir's capacity that can be used for purposes such as water supply, irrigation, and power generation.
  • Indicates future crop cultivation and output, particularly in the Rabi season. Rabi crops account for more than 50% of the total foodgrain production in India. Wheat, Barley, Gram, and some pulses are Rabi crops.

What is the significance of the Reservoir Level data?

  • Reservoir level data, averaged over the last decade, provides an insight into how reservoir levels have been maintained and utilised over a significant period.
  • Reservoir level data is crucial for understanding how well reservoirs are being maintained and utilised for critical needs such as irrigation, drinking water, and industrial use.
  • In regions dependent on irrigation, adequate reservoir levels ensure sufficient water supply for crop irrigation. Lower reservoir levels due to deficient rainfall directly impacts agricultural productivity, particularly the rabi crops that have a higher dependency on irrigation.
  • Long-term trends in reservoir storage levels indicate changes in rainfall patterns and water availability, which is often linked to broader environmental and climate change issues.

How to interpret the Reservoir Level data?

  • Reservoir level data is expressed as a percentage, showing how much of the reservoir's live capacity is filled. For example, 80% storage indicates the reservoir is filled to 80% of its usable capacity.
  • Comparing current data with the 10-year average provides insights into whether the water storage levels are improving, declining, or remaining stable over a period.
